Results of the poll were released this week in advance of the start of a major international conference in Poland where delegates are considering steps toward a new international climate-change treaty to replace the Kyoto Protocol, which expires in 2012.

There already are reports emerging that some countries, such as coal-dependent Poland, are pushing for special treatment to avoid making major commitments to slash carbon emissions during a global economic downturn. Less than half of those surveyed, or 47 per cent, said they were prepared to make personal lifestyle changes to reduce carbon emissions, down from 58 per cent last year.

Only 37 per cent said they were willing to spend "extra time" on the effort, an eight-point drop. And only one in five respondents - or 20 per cent - said they'd spend extra money to reduce climate change. That's down from 28 per cent a year ago.

While the overall Roman Catholic population increase is good news that we continue to attract and procreate strongly internationally, it drives home one of the intentions we pray for at Mass every Sunday- an increase in clergy. I hope Pope Benedict can stem the recession under JPII and turn the tide so the Church can keep track with not only their own population, but the global population as well.

If these Reuters' stats are right, that there are 60M Evangelical Christians in the United States, but a Catholic population of 70M... then why is everyone always concerned with who will carry the Evangelical vote? Who really cares when Roman Catholics, followers of the original and founding faith of Christianity, outnumber them nationally by more than 10M? Not to mention their direct relation to the Pope, who I hear carries some PR clout. Who do the Evangelicals have? Fallwell? He's dead.
